Byzantine emperor from 527. He recovered N
Africa from the Vandals, SE Spain from the
Visigoths, and Italy from the Ostrogoths,
largely owing to his great general
Belisarius. He ordered the codification of
Roman law, which has influenced European
jurisprudence. Justinian, born in Illyria,
was associated with his uncle, Justin I, in
the government from 518. He married the
actress Theodora, and succeeded Justin in
527. Much of his reign was taken up by an
indecisive struggle with the Persians. He
built the church of Sta Sophia in
Constantinople, and closed the university in
Athens in 529.
